More than 15 million students join post-secondary institutions every year in the U.S. Going to college is an exciting time for these learners, but it can also be a hectic time. There are plenty of decisions to be made, and one of the most important is housing.

While most students have no choice but to reside in college dorms, some have the luxury of choosing between dorms and off-campus college apartments. If you’re one of these students, don’t make the decision lightly.

This article delves into the benefits of off-campus student apartments. Read on to learn why it’s your best choice.

    1. Greater Independence

On-campus living has its fair share of benefits, including more convenience because you’re closer to your classes. You don’t have to waste time and energy on long commutes.

However, you can’t help but feel your independence is severely limited. Living in a college dorm typically comes with meal plans, for instance. In other words, someone is deciding on your diet.

On the other hand, living in a college apartment is akin to living in any other type of apartment. The only difference is college apartments are located near colleges.

You’re responsible for your living expenses, such as rent, food, and utilities. This kind of independence builds a greater sense of responsibility and prudence. By the time you’re done with college, your transition into the workforce and adult life will be seamless.

    2. Better Cost Management

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to which is cheaper between on-campus housing and off-campus housing. This will largely depend on the location, school, and the student’s lifestyle.

However, with off-campus housing, you have greater control of your expenses. Apartment rents vary, so if you have budget and size preferences, you can get an exact match. In cases where meal plans are built into on-campus housing costs, living in an apartment gives you the ability to adjust your food expenses accordingly.

In general, a financially savvy student can almost always spend less money living off-campus than on-campus.

    3. Fewer Restrictions

College life is synonymous with freedom. As a young adult, college presents an opportunity to live away from the watchful eye of your parents for the first time.

While you undoubtedly have more freedom over your choices in college, living in a dorm can at times feel like living with your parents. In many cases, residence halls have lockout hours, beyond which residents cannot leave or enter under normal circumstances.

You’re an adult now. Who says you should be asleep by midnight?

Well, if you don’t want such restrictions, apartment living is the way to go. Landlords have rental restrictions, but they have nothing to do with how late you can come back from a night out!

College Apartments Offer the Best Lifestyle Student housing is a major issue for both colleges and learners. Although college dorms have some awesome benefits, college apartments are simply the better option for a budget-conscious student who’s looking for greater independence and freedom.
